JIANG Hongqing, was born in 1975, graduated from China Academy of Art in 1998, diploma DNSEP in Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Art Paris-Cergy, art activities are video-art, short film and photograph.

[Biography]

Jiang Hongqing, was born in the southeast coast of China, where is a closed and traditional small town, this place has always been ignored as the border of the Central Plains culture. For this reason, there maintains a unique and oldest dialect and drama. In 1876, Chinese government signed an unequal「Yantai Treaty」with Western powers because of Margary Affair, this town began to open up and became a foreign trading port. With the continuous efforts of early Western missionaries, the town has still two mixed cultures so far both the clan groups of closed self-awareness and the courage to make changes with a religious fervor. From the World War I to the Cultural Revolution, the town had a large number of people came to every corner of the world by smuggling or doing hard labor for the war. In the migrating journey, they built their own churches, and talked with God with their own dialect.

Jiang Hongqing’s works was concerned about the decomposition and reconstruction of specific population’s   culture and individual’s spirit during the migration. He contrasted the reality with the historical  coordinate, which is a constant source of inspiration, that is also the way to reflect the true self through illusion of the perception.

[Marseille Theatre]/photography film/2001/marsaille

p001-

p003-

Marseille is a city both familiar and strange, most Chinese knew it as a port for the voyage of early Chinese revolutionaries to go to Europe, as well as that famous song La Marseillaise. When I came to this city in 2001, it gave me the impression is not considered a typical French city, even not was regarded as a typical European city.

Old Port is located in the downtown of Marseille, once was occupied by Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Franks. It was the last glimpse of the French poets as the time of leaving home. Now it has been full of fishermen with heavily accent, homeless beggars, prostitutes and tourists from all over the world; Maghreb, Jews, Chinese, all different colors were bronzed by the sun of Marseille. Then I put my camera to these wanderers and travelers, however am I not one of them?

[Sealed Bridge]/short film/2013/Roma

It was a lonely journey, and a forgotten encounter. Facing St. Michel on the top of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, who knows 300 years ago, a humble Chinese man came from the dragon kingdom imprisoned here alone until death.

Late summer of 2012, I went by way of Rome, lodged at a hostel facing the Sant'Angelo Castel, This was a former prison, now became a famous landmark. Every night,  the shining lights of the castle through the window gaps straight on my bed, I thrashed about in bed, unable to sleep. That vain Chinese young man written in Goethe’s poem [Der Chinese in Rom] came into my mind, thus an illusion world related to him had been expanded.

[The Dust Harbour]/short film/2014/Guang Hu Village

Guanhu Village and Hong Kong are separated by PENG (big eagle) Bay.

There may have the same beach views with all coasts of the South China: the soft sand and all kinds of weird and dry sea products, which are often used by local people to make the medicinal wine.

After drunk some wine and stepping on the sand, the man who used to walk on the hard concrete will feel a strong sense of weightlessness and unreal reality: The salty waves constantly rolled up foam devouring the beach, and rubbed sand gently; Pentagon Asterias puffing flames were flying from the smoke to the distant Fish Mountain’s back with the muffled rumbling; ancient giant Horseshoe Crab wearing the armor, slowly crawled out from the sand as if the earth was torn apart. A banner that was made by the mummification of a Gekko fluttering in the wind and the fire, two giant Davidianuses opened their sleeping eyes gazing to Echinoidea and Hippocampus, and rose high into the sky from the deep seabed, then disappeared into the pale yellow haze...

[Appetite trap]/installation/2004/nimes

French get used to taking bread every meal, it’s a kind of stick-liked bread, which is called directly “baguette” (stick) in French. It will be indeed as hard as a stick after a few days. As the result of this words ambiguity, I had an idea to make Chinese classic "furniture" with it.

In 100 years, we seemed to accustom to solve the problem of the East with the Western "concepts", including the revolution in China. "Revolution" and "bread" were both born in France. The French historian is generally believed that one of the reasons of French Revolution was people didn’t have enough bread. But this "Revolution" as a concept, was sold to China and was given the idealism by those Chinese intellectuals, whose English or French were not enough good. "Revolution" is no longer a low-level food problem. Mao Zedong believed that revolution was not a gentle behavior, but a high ideal which needs to achieve by the means of bloody violence.

The Journey of Bible(From Hebrew to China)/photography/2005/Paris

My grandmother was a devout Christian, so does my mother. They don’t understand any other languages except dialect. I would know whether God uses dialect to talk with those non-chosen people. Whenever I asked this question, my mother always scolded: God is omnipotent! But I am still curious if God’s will was lost during long and different translation.

In fact, God had feared the expansion of human ambition when they created Babel, he made the languages differentiation, and people didn’t trust each other anymore. However that was also a challenge for God.

From the Chinese Bible - English Bible - French Bible - Italian Bible - the Vulgate - Greek Bible, until traced back to the earliest Hebrew Bible, Roland Barthes said: comparison is the reason. In the process of text translation, the Bible’s weights are different because of the differences of the number of words and the changes of contents.
